I believe I can Fly(board)

Since seeing them all over YouTube and out on our own Okanagan Lake, I have always wanted to try my hand at strapping a flyboard to my feet and jetting into the sky. It looks so cool and fun and I felt like perhaps my experience with various types of boards might serve me well in the balance department. Imagine my giddiness when I got the word that we were going to team up with the outstanding gents at Hydrofly Kelowna. It was time to put my skills to the test.

I must say that the staff were awesome and the service was second to none. After a quick tutorial and waiver sign (gulp) we were out in open water and practicing maneuvering in the water. As a side note, I was happy that the buoyancy of my life vest was greater than the weight of the metal device strapped to my feet. Cee-ment shooz y’all! After getting comfortable in the water, Kevin, our instructor gave me a little throttle on the SeaDoo and before we knew it I was breaching like a frisky humpback.

It turns out that the feel of flyboarding was most akin to being on a two wheeled hoverboard. If you’ve successfully operated one of those you will have a head start for sure. As time went on and with some helpful tips from Kevin, I was able to hold er out of the water for a more extended period of time. I  felt like Aquaman busting out of the waves but after review of the video shot by our very own fabulous videographer, Cheryl, I looked decidedly more like some kind of concussed wizard ,waving contorted arms around, casting a complex spell while trying to keep my balance. All good. We’ll polish that up in the editing room. I should say that you do not feel rushed and frankly you get more time than I even had the energy to use up.

After Cheryl had a successful go with it as well, spirits were high on our way back to shore with a little adrenaline still coursing through our veins and a feeling of exhilarated accomplishment in our bellies. We both agreed that we have to come out again and build on the strides that we had taken out there. If you are looking for a rush this summer and want to impress your friends and family with a unique experience, you cannot go wrong with a trip downtown near the sails to check out Hydrofly Kelowna. You won’t soon forget it.
